What is Fracture Treatment?

A fracture is a break or crack in a bone caused by trauma, falls, accidents, or conditions like osteoporosis. Fracture treatment focuses on realigning and stabilising the bone so it heals correctly — restoring full function, strength, and mobility.

Dr. Ajay Karwasra uses the latest fixation techniques — plates, screws, nails, and external fixators — for complex fractures, while simpler breaks may be managed with casts or splints. Early, accurate treatment prevents long-term complications like malunion, stiffness, and chronic pain.

How Fractures Are Treated

Cast & Splint

For stable, non-displaced fractures. Immobilises the bone while it heals naturally over 4–8 weeks. Regular X-ray monitoring ensures correct alignment.

Plate & Screw Fixation (ORIF)

Open Reduction Internal Fixation — bone fragments are realigned and held with metal plates and screws. Ideal for displaced or periarticular fractures.

Intramedullary Nailing

A metal rod is inserted inside the bone canal to stabilise long bone fractures of the femur, tibia or humerus. Allows early weight-bearing.

External Fixator

Pins and rods outside the skin hold the bone in place. Used for open fractures, highly contaminated wounds, or as a temporary measure in polytrauma.

K-Wire Fixation

Thin metal wires stabilise small bone fragments — commonly used for hand, wrist, and paediatric fractures. Minimally invasive with quick recovery.

Traction

Gentle pulling force realigns fractures before or instead of surgery. Used in femur fractures and hip injuries, especially in elderly patients.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know if a bone is fractured or just sprained?
A fracture typically causes sharp, localised pain directly over the bone, swelling, and difficulty using the limb. An X-ray is the only reliable way to confirm a fracture. If in doubt, always get an X-ray.

In most cases, implants like plates and nails are left permanently and cause no problems. Removal is only done if the implant causes discomfort, infection, or is in a growing child. Dr. Karwasra will advise you individually.

Most fractures show early healing (callus formation) within 4–6 weeks. Complete bone remodelling can take 3–6 months depending on the fracture location, patient age, nutrition, and blood supply to the bone.

Immobilise the injured area using a splint or firm support. Do not try to straighten the bone yourself. Apply ice to reduce swelling, avoid putting weight on the injury, and come to the hospital or emergency department as soon as possible.

With modern fixation techniques like intramedullary nailing, many patients begin partial weight-bearing within a few days. Full weight-bearing typically resumes within 6–10 weeks, guided by X-ray healing.
