What is Limb Reconstruction Surgery?

Limb Reconstruction Surgery is a specialised branch of orthopaedic surgery focused on correcting structural problems of the arms and legs. This includes deformities present from birth, damage caused by trauma or infection, unequal limb lengths, and bones that have healed incorrectly after a fracture.
Dr. Ajay Karwasra uses advanced surgical techniques including external fixators, intramedullary nailing, and bone grafting to gradually correct the deformity and restore the limb to its natural shape and function — often giving patients the ability to walk, stand, and live normally for the first time.
Dr. Ajay Karwasra specialises in arthroplasty for knees, hips, and shoulders — using modern implants designed to last 15–20 years and closely mimic the natural movement of a healthy joint.
This surgery is most commonly performed on the knee and hip joints, but can also be done on the shoulder, elbow, and ankle. It is one of the most successful surgical procedures in orthopaedics, with high success rates and long-lasting results.

Surgical Techniques & Methods

External Fixator (Ilizarov / Taylor Frame)

A metal frame fitted outside the limb gradually corrects bone deformity or lengthens the bone over weeks — a proven technique for complex reconstructions.

Intramedullary Nailing

A strong metal nail is inserted inside the bone canal to stabilise fractures and support bone healing — used for long bone corrections.

Bone Grafting

Missing or damaged bone is replaced using the patient's own bone, donor bone, or synthetic material — filling gaps and stimulating new bone growth.

Osteotomy

The bone is surgically cut and repositioned to correct alignment — used for bow legs, knock knees, and joint malalignment conditions.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is limb reconstruction surgery only for children?
No — while many congenital deformities are treated in childhood, limb reconstruction surgery is performed on patients of all ages. Adults with post-traumatic deformities, malunited fractures, and limb length issues are commonly treated.

There is some discomfort initially, but patients adapt well within the first 1–2 weeks. Pain is managed with medication and the gradual correction process is carefully monitored throughout.

Using the Ilizarov or Taylor Spatial Frame technique, bone can be lengthened by 5–8 cm or more depending on the case. The process is gradual — approximately 1 mm of correction per day.

Yes — old malunited fractures and long-standing deformities can often still be corrected with modern reconstruction techniques. An assessment with Dr. Karwasra will determine the best approach.
